What’s the difference between Hatha and Vinyasa yoga?? I get asked this all the time! The Sanskrit word “Hatha” wins the award for most confusing term. It describes all breath-based yoga, including heating, standing postures (Ha = sun), and cooling, seated postures (Tha = moon). Hatha Yoga (in most parts of the world) connotes a yoga style in which you move more slowly and hold yoga postures for a longer period of time. The stillness and slower pace makes the style ideal for those who are Air (Vata) and Fire (Pitta) dominant. The word Vinyasa means to “link breath and movement”— meaning you might move back and forth between two poses, synchronizing the movement to your inhale and exhale. Where you might hold Warrior 2 pose statically for 5-8 breaths in Hatha, in Vinyasa Yoga, you’d flow between Warrior 2 pose and Reverse Warrior. Air (Vata) and Fire (Pitta) dominant folks flock to Vinyasa Yoga. They’re attracted to the movement and heat-building. This style is actually best suited for earthy Kaphas, who need more movement to stay balanced.
